5k prep the night before

The goal for race prep is to feel as confident as possible and not leave anything to chance. No matter how much you’ve trained or how many races you’ve run, you’ll likely always have a few pre-race jitters.

Here is my go-to prep routine:

The night before

  • Look at directions to race
  • Review the race route
  • Lay out your race clothes, including any extra clothes you want to wear before or after the race
  • Put stroller in car, if applicable
  • Eat thoughtful dinner (1 cup of pasta and a salad is my go-to)
  • Prep breakfast ahead of time so you can just grab and go

Day of race

  • Wake up at least 2 hours ahead of race (most races are in the morning)
  • Eat breakfast if thats your thing. Do this first-thing so nothing is heavy in your stomach
  • Drink something—either coffee or your pre-race fuel. Do this early so it has time to work through your body
  • Go to the bathroom
  • Get dressed and everything ready
  • Stretch
  • Go to the bathroom again
  • Leave!
